“Your Body’s Talking. Are You Listening?”

June 30, 20251 min read

If you’ve been running on fumes, waking up tired, or snapping at people you care about—you’re not alone. This is what happens when the nervous system has been stuck in overdrive for too long. And the tricky part? You can’t always think your way out of it.

But your body already knows what you need. The question is—can you hear it?

This is where interoception comes in. It’s the science (and the subtle art) of noticing the signals coming from inside your body—your heartbeat, breath, muscle tension, temperature, even your gut. When you’re tuned in, these signals help you respond instead of react. But when you’ve been overriding them for years? You stop noticing altogether.

As nurses and caregivers, we’re experts at pushing through. But healing starts when we pause and listen.

3 Simple Ways to Start Listening Inward:

1. One-Minute Check-In
Once or twice a day, pause and ask: What am I feeling physically right now? Tense jaw? Shallow breath? Just noticing is the first step to regulating.

2. Belly + Heart Hold
Place one hand on your heart and one on your belly. Breathe slowly for a few cycles. Feel the rise and fall. Let this be your signal of safety.

3. Journal the Body
Each night, jot down one thing your body told you that day—and how you responded. This builds awareness and compassion over time.

This isn’t about “fixing” anything. It’s about reconnecting with the part of you that’s been there all along—quietly trying to guide you back to balance.

So this week, try it:
“My body’s trying to tell me something. I’m finally listening.”
You just might be surprised by what you hear.
