Starting Where You Are: The Power of 'Now' in Nursing and Life

You don’t need to “do” more to heal.

You’ve got a chart in one hand, a ringing phone in the other, a monitor beeping endlessly near you, and your mind is already five tasks ahead. Sound familiar?

In a nurse’s day, there’s barely a pause between one moment and the next. Breaks get skipped. Emotions get shelved. You keep moving because you have to.

But inside, something is asking for space. For breath. For rest.

This is where yoga begins. Not in a studio or on a mat, but in a single breath that says: "I’m here."

In Yogic texts, the first Yoga Sutra (passages passed down through centuries): “Now, the practice of yoga begins.”

Not when life calms down. Not when you have more time. Not when you feel better.

Now. Right here. Just as you are.

And for nurses, that can look like:

  • Taking one intentional slow, deep breath before you walk into a patient’s room.

  • Feeling your feet against the floor as you chart.

  • Washing your hands and noticing the temperature of the water.

These moments of awareness are the beginning of yoga. Not the whole journey. Simply the beginning. And that’s enough.

Because right now, you don’t need one more thing to master. You don’t need another responsibility.

Start with that.

Start with now.
